Shalom Zone is a nonprofit, faith-based program
devoted to reducing the internal and external pressures of poverty.
We are an Opportunity for you to help us help others. Thanks for visiting!
We offer three major programs to children in kindergarten through 5th grade. All programs are free:
- After School Program: provides children a safe place with enrichment activities, homework assistance, computer skill training, Bible study, group activities, recreation and a hot meal. Our literacy program promotes reading and comprehension skills through one-on-one tutoring with a consistent mentor. We recently started Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops with much success!
- Community Health Ministry: provides whole health education, clinics and a Back to School Health Fair serving over 1800 members of the community.
- Summer Day Camp: provides children a safe place to enjoy songs, games, crafts, Bible study, field trips a hot lunch and much more!
Shalom Zone serves an inner city portion of Des Moines, Iowa that is distressed in many ways, challenging the present and future lives of the children who live there.
- The annual per capita income is approximately $8000 per year.
- 43% of families live in poverty.
- 97% of Shalom Zone children read below grade level when entering our after school literacy program.
- The infant mortality rate in this neighborhood approaches that of third world countries.
- 1/3 of Des Moines’ crime occurs in this neighborhood of approximately 9,000 people.
Our staff and many volunteers are devoted to giving children a safe place, loving care and activities that let them know of God’s love for them as they grow in self-esteem, knowledge and wisdom.
We appreciate any gift or support you may provide.
